Kindergarten through fifth grade students participated in the Global Outdoor Classroom Day on May 23rd. Outdoor Classroom Day is a global movement to make time outdoors part of every child’s day. On two days each year, teachers take children outdoors to play and learn. All year round, the Outdoor Classroom Day community campaigns for more time outdoors every day. Students rotated through several different stations, many of which involved members of the Copenhagen community. Thank you to all of our community member that help to make this such a special day. A VERY SPECIAL Thank you to Mrs. Tamie Muncy for all of her hard work organizing this wonderful event. It was an amazing day!
Here is a snippet of the day!
This year’s theme at Hopenhagen was about soil! Students learned how to plant lavender plants and what they need to thrive by planting one. Lavender plants love drier “feet.”Coach Eric did an activity called “Soil My Undies.” This activity taught the students about healthy soil. To check how healthy the soil is at Hopenhagen, each grade level planted a pair of “undies.” In 60 days, we will check to see which pair has deteriorated the most! It is a quick and dirty way to test the microbial activity in the soil. The more the underwear deteriorates, the healthier the soil!!
Students received a lesson on how maple syrup is made and was able to sample pure maple syrup from Snyder’s Sugar Shack. Mrs. Snyder taught the students how to identify maple trees by looking at the leaves. Students also received vanilla ice cream donated by Barb Crane.
Mark Murray from Murcrest farms also presented on the different types of feed that farmers grow to feed their cows. He talked about how much a cow eats and drinks.
Students were read to by Mrs. Fazio, Ms. Pridell, and Mrs. Hefferon at the Copenhagen Park. Ms. Pridell even shared her knowledge about the earliest people that settled in Copenhagen with the fourth and fifth graders.
While at school Ms. Corbett scheduled PE classes outside where many played kickball. Mrs. Mulvaney had different art stations set up in the courtyard and students got to be creative by making nature headbands/bracelets, paint with fly swatters, and colorful bubble art.
Students also observed Hartley Hartwood's in action with his chainsaw carvings.
Lastly, students used their artistic abilities and decorated the sidewalks around the village for Memorial Day weekend!
